  5. Manage your font suitcases and printer fonts in 'Sets', like Extensions Manager!

Fonts Manager is similar to the Mac OS Extensions Manager, but it manages Fonts instead of Control Panels and Extensions. It allows the enabling and disabling of font suitcases and printer fonts in 'Sets'. It supports the viewing and printing of font samples, export of 'Sets', import of saved 'Sets', Balloon Help, and a Tutorial Topics system. It is NOT a Control Panel or Extension (like ATM Delu... or Suitca... or Master Juggl...), NOR does it pretend to be one by living in the Startup Items folder (like Font Reser...); thus it works on ALL Macs with System 7.1 or later, including Mac OS 8.1 (and HFS+), without modifying the NORMAL startup and operation of your computer. Thousands worldwide running all kinds of Macs (and Mac OS compatibles) have switched to Fonts Manager to get 'Up & Running'.

  27. Easy Installation
  28.  
  29. Based on your screen size (for US/International/Roman version ONLY), you need to pick either the Small or Larger version.  You should see two items in each folder.  Just double-click on Fonts Managerｪ.  It automatically moves 'Fonts Managerｪ Help' to the Preferences folder (and moves an older version of the help file to the trash).  Keep this ReadMe file handy.  You may need it one day.

  33. If you are upgrading from a previous version, don't forget to save your sets in the old version, so you can open them in the new version!  Version 3.6 or later is required to implement this upgrade feature.  Look for this option in the File menu.

  74. Register Instructions

When you have paid, you will be sent authentication information.  Select Register Now! from the Register menu in Fonts Manager to enter this information.  This will remove the message at startup, and add your authentication to the splash screen.  This will serve as proof to institutional auditors that you have paid for this software.

  94. Paying for Fonts Manager is fairly simple.  Open the enclosed Register application.  Enter your name, your email address, and the number of single user licenses you wish to purchase (or Site or World-Wide licenses).  Save or Copy or Print the data from the Register application and send the data and payment to Kagi.

  96. Credit Card / First Virtual
  97. If paying with credit card or First Virtual, you can email or fax the data to Kagi.  Their email address is sales@kagi.com and their fax number is (510) 652-6589.  You can either Copy the data from Register and paste into the body of an email message or you can Save the data to a file and you can attach that file to an email message.  There is no need to compress the data file; it's already very small.  If you have a fax modem, just Print the data to the Kagi fax number.

  99. Payments sent to Kagi via email are processed within 3 to 4 days.  You will receive an email acknowledgement when it is processed.  Payments sent via fax take up to 10 days and if you provide a correct internet email address you will receive an email acknowledgement.

  111. You can pay with a wide variety of currencies from different countries, but at present if you pay by check, it must be a check drawn in US Dollars.  Kagi cannot accept checks in other currencies; the conversion rate for non-US$ checks is about US $15 per check and that is just not practical.

  114. If you have a purchasing department, you can enter all the data into the Register program and then select Invoice as your payment method.  Print three copies of the invoice and send it to your accounts payable people.  You may want to highlight the line that mentions that they must include a copy of the invoice with their payment.  Kagi cannot bill your company directly - you need to act on my behalf to generate the invoice and handle all the paperwork on your end.

  116. Physical vs. Electronic
  117. Please do not fax or email payment forms that indicate Cash, Check, or Invoice as the payment method.  As far as we know, there is still no technology to transfer physical objects via fax or email, and without the payment, the form cannot be processed.

  120. Payments sent via postal mail take time to reach Kagi and then up to 10 days for processing.  Again, if you include a correct email address, you will hear from Kagi when the form is processed.

  127. Usage Tips
  128.  
  129. ･  If your fonts are not showing up in Fonts Managerｪ, the fonts may be damaged.  I highly recommend simply reinstalling a fresh copy of the font.  To remove fonts, you must first drag the Fonts folder OUT of the System Folder.  Then, you may trash specific fonts at will.

  131. ･  Another reason fonts may not show is you've got screen fonts NOT INSIDE suitcases in your Fonts folder.  To fix this, make new suitcases for these 'loose' fonts.
  132.  
  133. ･  Orphaned screen fonts - Aaron uses a screen font called Espy Sans 10.  This screen font belongs inside a suitcase, but it is NOT distributed this way.  Outside of a suitcase, a screen font is likely to become damaged; consequently, Fonts Manager was designed to display orphaned screen fonts in the printer fonts section to alert you to this error.  To correct for orphaned screen fonts, make a new suitcase (duplicate an existing suitcase, rename it, and empty it), and drop your orphaned screen font inside the new suitcase.  So, using Aaron as an example:  make a new empty suitcase called Aaron (exact name not important), and drop Espy Sans 10 inside the new Aaron suitcase.

  135. ･  You may keep Fonts Managerｪ stored anywhere you like - I prefer the Apple Menu.  To do this, open your System Folder, and drop Fonts Managerｪ into your Apple Menu Items folder.  Keep this ReadMe file handy.  You may need it one day.

  137. ･  Which Fonts Manager 'set' do I have selected right now? - The most creative way I can suggest for knowing which set you have active, is to make an empty suitcase having the same name as your 'set' name. Allow it ONLY in that set, and in your font menu (or Key Caps) you'll know which set you have at all times...

  139. ･  For localized (non-US) System Software versions, to make command-key combinations work properly, select the 'US' keyboard layout from the layout (flag) menu just to the right of the Apple Guide menu.
  140.  
  141. ･  If for some reason Fonts Managerｪ fails, and you must restart (this can happen with any application you know), the Fonts folder inside the System Folder may be empty.  DO NOT panic.  This is OK.  Inside the System Folder you'll see the main 'Fonts' folder and two new folders:  'Fonts (Printer Fonts)' and 'Fonts (Suitcases)'.  All of your fonts will be in one of these three folders.  Move the contents of 'Fonts (Printer Fonts)' and 'Fonts (Suitcases)' back into the main 'Fonts' folder to reinstall them.  Don't move the two folders themselves (NOTE:  Any folders nested inside the main 'Fonts' folder are completely ignored).  Then restart.

  143. ･  If you use EvenBetterBusError, or some other error-catching extension, and you get an unimplemented trap at quit, you may wish to download the software again from the InfoMac site. I've posted the fix only at InfoMac. You can tell if you have the fixed version if there is any reference at all to EvenBetterBusError in the Read Me or Tutorial Topics.

  145. ･  If you have a large number of fonts, you may wish to increase the memory allocation above 1024k.  To do this, Get Info on a FRESH copy of Fonts Managerｪ, and change the Preferred Size.  I would suggest starting with as much as 8192k, and working your way down, depending on the amount of unused RAM you have to work with.

  147. ･  It's a good idea to quit all applications before running Fonts Managerｪ, so you'll have all of your memory available.
  148.

  151. ･  If you've had Extension conflicts at startup or any problems, especially with another font management utility (or it is still installed), you may need to do a 'clean install' of your System Software, due to damage the utility might have caused. This works 100% of the time.

  153.     Clean Install For System 7.1 thru Mac OS 8.1:
  154.       1 - Startup with Disk Tools (or your System CD).
  155.       2 - Run Disk First Aid, and repair the hard drive.  Quit Disk First Aid.
  156.       3 - Run Apple HD SC Setup (or Drive Setup), and update the driver.  Quit.
  157.       4 - Open your hard drive, and rename your System Folder to 'Storage' (exact spelling not crucial).
  158.       5 - Open the Storage folder, and drag two files to the Trash.  System and Finder.  Empty the Trash.
  159.       6 - Close all windows.  If you have no System CD, restart with 'Install Me First' (or first System disk).
  160.          - If you have a System CD, restart again, letting the computer automatically startup with the System CD.
  161.       7 - Install your System Software with 'Easy Install'.  Restart normally (VERY IMPORTANT).
  162.  
  163.       7a  - If you have EITHER System 7.1, and need to reinstall System Update 3.0 from floppy disk OR System 7.5 (any version), and need to reinstall System 7.5 Update 2.0 from floppy disk, THEN restart again w/Extensions OFF (holding shift key at startup), and install the update.  Restart normally (VERY IMPORTANT).

  165.       7b  - If you need to reinstall System 7.5 Update 2.0 from CD, put in your original System CD, then restart again w/Extensions OFF (holding shift key at startup).  When startup is complete, drag the System CD to the Trash, insert the update CD and install the update.  Restart normally (VERY IMPORTANT).

  167.       7c  - If you have System 7.5.3 (any Revision) and need to reinstall System 7.5.5 Update from floppy disk, restart again w/Extensions OFF (holding shift key at startup), and install the update.  Restart normally (VERY IMPORTANT).

  169.       7d   - If you have Mac OS 7.6 and need to reinstall Mac OS 7.6.1 Update from floppy disk, restart again w/Extensions Disabled* (holding shift key at startup), and install the update.  Restart normally (VERY IMPORTANT).

  171.       7e   - If you have Mac OS 8 and need to reinstall Mac OS 8.1 Update from floppy disk, restart again w/Extensions Disabled* (holding shift key at startup), and install the update. Restart normally (VERY IMPORTANT).

  174.       8 - After the installation(s), you'll need to reinstall your applications, as well as your fonts.  But try Fonts Managerｪ first, before you do this (after all, this is why you're here).
  175.  
  176.          - To reinstall your fonts, simply drop each font onto the CLOSED System Folder icon on the hard drive.  You'll get the standard message about Font installation.  Click OK to proceed.  If you do NOT get the message, it's a good chance you're trying to install a damaged font.

  178.          - To reinstall your applications (or any software that has an 'installer'), do the following:

  180.              1. Restart and hold the shift key after the startup chime (and make sure any external SCSI devices connected are turned ON, not OFF).
  181.              2. Do the installation.
  182.              3. Restart normally, without holding down any keys.

  184.          - If installing from a zip disk, just make sure the zip disk is in the drive at startup, and follow the steps listed above.

  186.          - If you have an Apple CD-ROM, and the installer application is on a CD, change step 1 slightly:

  188.              Before step 1, Insert your Apple System CD. It may be called any of the following:
  189.                   Apple Macintosh CD
  190.                    Performa CD
  191.                    Restore CD
  192.                    Mac OS xxx

  194.              1. Restart and hold the shift key after the startup chime (and make sure any external SCSI devices connected are turned ON, not OFF).

  196.              After step 1, drag your Apple System CD (whatever it is called) to the Trash to eject it, and insert your CD which contains the installer.

  198.              2. Do the installation.
  199.              3. Restart normally, without holding down any keys.

  202.              Make sure you complete step 3 before attempting another installation. Most installers will take care of step 3 for you, but some don't. There are very rare exceptions that will make this fail, but for the most part, it ensures that the installer application has no interference. Setting Extensions Manager (or Conflict Catcher or whatever) to something other than 'All On' can interfere with the 'cleanup' that happens at restart (step 3). Also, some installers may not adequately replace components that are in a 'disabled' folder. Using the latest Apple System CD that you have will help make this work properly, if you have a computer that Apple updated the CD speed in mid-production

  204.              Hope this helps.  It sure saves loads of Macintosh customers time and effort, especially when System Software has been damaged due to improper installation.  This tip and the requirement that all external SCSI devices (if connected to ANY Mac) be turned ON before startup are my favorite 'Mac Secrets'.

  206.       9 - After all software is running to your satisfaction (or at any point after System installation), you may trash the 'Storage' folder.  DO NOT be tempted to drag files from your Storage folder into the new System Folder.  This is BY FAR the most common mistake Mac users make when doing a clean install.  Better to reinstall from original disks/CD than to attempt a drag-install of specific components from an 'old' System Folder (Storage).  From experience, it actually takes less time to reinstall from original disks/CD.
